Over the past year we’ve noticed a growth in the number of ‘herbal tea/tisane/infusion’ mentions in the news.
Very slowly, the retail world is beginning to respond to facts and figures – take for example supermarket giant Tesco revamping its own brand herbal infusion range, as “younger consumers aged 16-34” have shown “above-average usage of fruit/herbal, green or speciality black teas”.
The emphasis on herbal infusions is a direct result of the massive slump in sales of standard black teabags over the past few years, something we predicted over a year ago. Retail magazine, The Grocer, has summed it up quite nicely here, citing 870 million less cups of builder’s tea drunk by Brits in 2017, the steepest volume decline in 4 years. We predict this figure will continue to decline, as the new generation of tea and tisane drinkers are more focused on health and quality.
