Description

Umami Delight

Buckwheat, was domesticated and first cultivated for its grain-like seeds in inland Southeast Asia, around 6000 BC, and from there spread to Central Asia and Tibet, and then to the Middle East and Europe. Domestication most likely took place in the western Yunnan region of China. Contrary to it’s name, buckwheat is not related to wheat, as it is not a grass, and is a pseudocereal as its seeds may be used in the same way as cereals such as oats, rye and barley.

Buckwheat is widely used for drinking purposes – in Japan it is called soba-cha; in Korea it is known as memil-cha; in China it’s named kuqiao-cha; and in Russia, grechka-chai.

Buckweat tisane is considered to be cool in temperature in traditional Chinese medicine and has been used for its health benefits, such as clearing the spleen and kidneys. At present, clinical studies have been conducted on buckwheat to determine: antioxidant, vitamin and mineral content; benefits to the cardiovascular and circulatory system; diabetic control; anti-inflammatory properties; impact on feminine health (in particular PCOS); and benefits of hydration.

Naturally grown without the use of any pesticides or chemicals, our roasted buckwheat is harvested 2,200-2,500MASL from the Gegharkunik region of Armenia. Our roasted buckwheat is lightly roasted to bring out the earth, nutty and sweet flavours.

Once the infusion has been drunk the remaining buckwheat kernels may be consumed as a cooked cereal/seed such as quinoa, amaranth, barley, oat groats etc.

Buckwheat tisane may be drunk hot or cold at any time of the day and and may be enjoyed before a meal to aid digestion or during or after exercise for increased hydration.
